![]() ![]() For fucks sake the dude closed his eyes during a free throw in a game because he could lol Unfortunately we suffer from recency bias. ![]() He would just take a fade away with a hand in his face because he could. And this probably isnt even the most unreal thing he did lol He also took really, REALLY difficult shots, because he knew he could make them, and he wanted you to know he could make them. This guy was MVP, Scoring Champ, Defensive Player of the Year, and Steals leader in 87-88ĭude was just unreal. In theory sure you could cut your whole team and sign 12 g league players with 2016 curry or 2009 lebron and end up with a bad record and an mvp-level performance, but in practice I doubt we see it unless something drastic changes with the rules. Also, a bad team is likely going to have multiple lottery picks on it, making the likelihood of them being that bad pretty low. Or a more nerdy stats way of saying it: if a player has a high enough WORP (with worp being a measure of relative performance) to win mvp, it's highly unlikely for the total team win shares to be lower than 38 (or whatever) on the year, given that the entire team is full of nba players and the salary cap rules are followed. Realistically, especially with the salary cap, max, and draft rules for parity, there's almost no way a player could win mvp from a really bad team. This is why mvp is the way it is and why u/lordkieron is correct in the implication that if this is really the best player this team should be winning more. Google words it as 'best performing player in the regular season' It's actually the most valuable player in the league. MVP should be the person most valuable to their team, But he was just as amazing both years, with better individual stats and better defense than his championship years, literally a one-man show. The next year Jordan did pretty much the same thing but because Pippen and Grant improved the team won 50 games and Jordan won MVP and DPoY. He was our best shot blocker as well as our best perimeter defender, with 1.6 blocks per game from our shooting guard. He was incredibly energetic at both ends on a team that was not contending. And he was arguably the best midrange shooter in NBA history, especially considering the volume.īut what was new was Jordan’s dedication to defense. He would either go to the basket or pull up for an uncontested midrange shot because they were sagging off him so much. Often teams still double or triple teamed Jordan and he got a lot of assists, but he would also score through double and triple teams. Because man-to-man defense was mandatory, and only the man with the ball could be double or triple teamed, this put Jordan one-on-one until he got the ball, then made it as hard as possible to double or triple team after he got the ball. The offense was simple, isolate Jordan and everyone else line up on the opposite side of the floor. Pippen did not even start at all until the playoffs, backing up the immortal Brad Sellers during the regular season. Pippen and Grant were raw so Jordan had very little help. I was there! I bought a one quarter share in season tickets starting that year. Don’t forget to vote for Al-P!
